Conti DWS tires - Drives like a different car.
Before getting all busy with the Sema stuff I got a chance to drive a trial set of Conti DWS tires. And let me say…. they are just stunning. So impressive in fact I think that its in that category of mods for the Lancer that would be a must have.
I have talked about this in great depth regarding the Dunlop SP5000M OEM tires… they are…. to be completely honest, the worst tires I have ever driven on. The ride is harsh, the tread has unusual wear patterns and seems to bring it self to a quick death after about 35,000km, but lets not forget my favorite flaw… driving in the winter is like converting your car into an untargeted rocket on wheels in snow / ice . The DWS is completely amazing.
Seriously, believe me when I say this… Pick Toronto’s worst streets or highways… my personal favorite (Steeles Avenue) and the (Gardner Express way) very harsh driving, lots of potholes, cracks every 3 seconds, and expansion joints…. driving over them feels much better. real dampening. Now to be fair, part of the reason why the OEM tire is so harsh is due to its construction of its side walls and belt where kevlar is used. The mass of the tire it self is 26 pounds per. The DWS even thou its a slightly wider 225 tire… weighs about 23. For those where unsprung weight is king… your gonna love this. And you should gain in the fuel economy department as well. or at the very least balance out vs. OEM based on rolling resistance.
I logged about 1000km on it, and it pained me to go back to my dunlops at the end of my testing. Since winter is around the corner… its time for the Winter Force Tires.
